Houses are typically identified by specific addresses – a house number and street name. The law, however, recognizes homes via legal descriptions.  Legal descriptions help locate and identify properties with written words.  For example, 11801 Canon Blvd., Newport News, VA 23606 can also be legally identified as Oyster Point Lot 3A2 (1.397A) Section 02.

Legal descriptions can easily be identified through tax records.  Contact your local city real estate assessor’s office to find your tax assessment.
